John Madew

In August 2024, John commenced his posting as Deputy Consul-General and Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner in Shanghai. He leads a team of professionals to promote trade and investment links between Australia and East China region.

Prior to this position, John held a number of senior executive roles at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), the Australian Government’s trade and investment promotion agency, including General Manager of Digital Services, Head of Digital Trade Services Strategy, and Head of Technology and Health Client Services. 

John has extensive experience overseas with Austrade, driving trade, investment and education promotion for Australia. Most recently as Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner in Taipei 2023 – 2024. In 2016-2020, he held a leadership role in the South Asia operation as the Regional General Manager across India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. From 2012-2016, John was responsible for sub-Saharan Africa operations with offices in South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Mauritius, where he worked with Australian companies in 40+ African states across resources, infrastructure, ICT, and education sectors. John also had roles with Austrade in the UK and Canada.

Before joining government, John worked in consulting roles for software companies, beginning his career as an analyst in credit insurance and trade finance. John holds a Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) and is a qualified accountant.
